Promoting Vascularization in Kidney Organoids
March 12, 2019 | Terry Sharrer
To make muscle cells from human stem cells, mechanical stress, causing stretching and contraction, has to “teach” the derived tissue how to behave. The same appears to be true with kidney organoids. To that end, researchers at the Wyss Institute exposed kidney organoids in a 3D bioprinted organ-on-a-chip to fluidic shear stress. As a result, the organoids advanced their vascularization. “The vessels growing on the 3D-printed chips form an interconnected network with open lumens, which can be perfused with fluids as confirmed by directly imaging fluorescent beads moving freely through them.” MORE
