CRISPR-Cpf1 Gene Editing
August 22, 2017 | Terry Sharrer
Gene editing technology known as CRISPR has only been known to science for four years, but its impact in terms of scientific interest has been considerable. CRISPR molecules are those proteins that cut nucleic acids; Cas molecules are those—some 93 of them—that guide CRISPR to its targets. The best known guide is Cas 9, class 2 molecules derived from Streptococcus pyogenes. This piece focuses on another class 2 type, Cpf1, found in Lachnospiraceae and Acidaminococus bacteria that can guide CRISPR to longer strands of RNA, thereby making the targeting more precise. MORE
