For persistent smokers, their “airway field of injury” extends all the way from their bronchial epithelium to the cells lining the nose. Among such patients, nodules—most of which are benign—can present in the entire route. Knowing that, and having previously identified malignant biomarkers—researchers at the Boston University School of Medicine have shown that nasal epithelium, collected on a swab, can be microarrayed to reveal cancer-associated gene expression.
