Approximately 80% of adults will suffer back pain at some time in their lives, sciatica being a common form. To alleviate sciatic pain, surgeons remove a small section of bone that is compressing the nerve, but measuring the relied for a once-and-done procedure can be problematic. In order to improve outcomes, surgeons at Henry Ford Hospital in Detroit have tested “smart” mechanical sensors that measure nerve function—called “mechanomyography.” Results showed significant improvement.
