Since the beginning of gene therapy clinical trials in 1990, researchers have largely relied on viral vectors to deliver therapeutic genes into cells. Now, with an NIH grant, a group at Allegheny General Hospital (Pittsburgh, PA) is experimenting with ultrasound waves to temporarily modify the permeability of cells, allowing microbubbles to insert DNA.
