“Virtual Nanoscopy”

In electron microscopy, sharpness of an image, and depth of field vary inversely, just as with an SLR camera picture. So, in producing micrographs, the choice is between high definition of a miniscule site or low definition of a wider field. Researchers at the University of Leiden, however, have resolved this problem by computerized assembly of a Google Earth-like map based on 26,000 narrow field, high resolution (16m pixels/inch) micrographs, into a complete picture (281 gigapixels) of a zebrafish embryo.
