DNA Sequencing Technology

Earlier this year, Tagline carried a story about “desktop sequencing” based on Ion Torrent’s semi-conductor approach which detects DNA bases electronically rather than using fluorescent tags and lasers. At present, Ion Torrent seems to be leading the pack toward the “$1,000 genome,” and during the recent deadly E. coli contamination in Europe, researchers were able to quickly identify the new strain’s drug resistant genes with Ion Torrent’s sequencer.  MORE
