Coming Closer to the $1,000 Genome

In the race to realize “the $1,000 genome,” a small sequencing company, Ion Torrent (Guilford, CT) has moved the ball with a semiconductor chip machine that can sequence in hours what other machines do in a week or more, and it projects the cost of this sequencer to be around $50,000 compared to today’s $500,000 models. While Ion Torrent is a small company, a major player in this field, Life Technologies, bought the firm last August for $375m. MORE
