The Burden of Food Allergy
November 16, 2010 | Terry Sharrer
Peanuts, shrimp, eggs, and milk have long been known for causing food allergies, but in a recent study of 8,200 participants, ages 1 to 60, researchers not only determined a more accurate incidence of food allergies (2.5% of the population, with 7.5 million having at least one reaction) but also linked an “allergic march” from food allergy to asthma to hay fever. African-American boys with asthma are the most likely group to require Emergency Room treatment when an allergy exacerbates their breathing. (Since the study group topped out at age 60, the risk for elders has to be presumed, which could be as high as that of children). MORE
