The $100 Genome
March 24, 2009 | Terry Sharrer
No, the $1,000 genome has not yet seen the light of day, but hardly a week goes by without hearing of a “better mousetrap,” which in this case is a device from nanotechnologist Han Cao, founder of BioNanomatrix (Philadelphia, PA). Cao has developed a nanofluidics chip that, in effect, unwinds DNA and runs it through tens of thousands of channels, preparing it for automated sequencing in about ten minutes. It remains unresolved how to separate quickly the double stranded DNA, but Cao and sequencers at Complete Genomics (Mountain View, CA) are working on the timing. They envision the $100 genome being sequenced, altogether, in about 8 hours. MORE, including a vdeo with Cao.
