Innovative Toothpaste for Being “Long in the Tooth”

One might not expect a trade guild, founded in 1322 for outfitting knights, to be promoting medical innovation today, but that indeed is the case. The Worshipful Company of Armourers and Brasiers awarded its “Venture Prize” in materials science to dental researchers at Queen Mary University in London for a new additive to toothpaste. The additive is calcium and phosphorus-filled glass particles that fill tooth enamel when gums recede leaving people “long in the tooth”—a condition that affects about a third of all humans.
