Speeding Up Stem Cell Growth

Before stem cell therapies can become more robust, cell culture has to be finely tuned so that the stem cells in the most pluripotent state expand without going down the path to development. Much research has gone into finding the right growth factor nutrients, but a lab at Emory University has shown how dramatically oxygen deprivation (hypoxia) speeds up stem cell expansion—indeed, from 39 days to 14 days.
