The Youngest Stem Cells
December 19, 2017 | Terry Sharrer
Pluripotent embryonic stem cells are derived from blastocysts of about 100 cells, which means those stem cells have already begun to differentiate and lost some ability to become any other cell type. Researchers at the Wellcome Trust’s MRC Stem Cell Laboratory at the University of Cambridge have been able to isolate and culture “younger” stem cells which are totipotent. These are called “Expanded Potential Stem Cells.” While this piece doesn’t describe the culture methods, those details may be found in a Nature article (Nature 550, 393-397, 19 October 2017) by senior author Pentao Liu).
