Home Blood Testing
Patients undergoing chemotherapy need frequent blood tests to monitor the effectiveness of their treatment and to register alerts to adverse effects. Home monitoring would make this much easier, and a Mountain View, CA company, Athelas, has a device which makes that possible. The patient draws a drop of blood for a test strip and then inserts the strip into the device “. . . . which uses computer imaging to return lab-grade complete blood count test results (CBC). The information is sent to an Android or iOS app and, if needed, to the patient’s doctor. This allows doctors and patients to easily obtain daily updates that allow them to monitor treatment or disease progress.” It takes about 60 seconds for the device to recognize almost all blood cell types.
