Temperature Reading Smartphone Monitors Diabetic Foot Ulcers
August 29, 2017 | Terry Sharrer
Diabetic foot ulcers are implicated in some 100,000 amputations each year. In most instances, the problem does present until the surface lesion appears, though the underlying pathology can proceed unobserved for about five weeks. Podimetrics (Cambridge, MA) has developed a device called the “SmartMat” that can monitor a coming ulcer by measuring different locations on the sole for heat. Before the ulcer breaks skin it is hotter than surrounding locations. Presumably the SmartMat could be used in tracking healing as well. MORE
