A Wearable Diabetes Monitor that Detects Three Compounds in Sweat

Cortisol, glucose and interleukin 6 are diabetes-related compounds found in a diabetic’s sweat. To measure those three levels, researchers at the University of Texas at Dallas have devised a wearable, watch-like, monitor that can track those compound for a week at a time. “One factor that facilitated their device’s progress was the use of room temperature ionic liquid (RTIL), a gel that serves to stabilize the microenvironment at the skin-cell surface so that a week’s worth of hourly readings can be taken without the performance degrading over time.” RTIL with antibody sensors built upon a flexible, nanopore membrane is how they built the device. It also has wireless data transmission. MORE
