Compact Supercomputer for Advanced Bioinformatics

Imagine the look on the TSA inspector’s face when he asks if that’s a computer in your carry-on bag, and you say, “Yes, it’s a supercomputer.” At present, that’s a real possibility with Nivida’s “supercomputer in a box,” named DGX-1. Nivia’s name is more typically associated with gaming technology, but DGX-1’s deep learning capability and huge data crunching has already made its way into Massachusetts General Hospital’s Center for Clinical Data Science, where it will apply artificial intelligence to integrating imaging, electronic health records, and molecular diagnostics data. It costs $129,000, but that’s clearly within reach of an NIH grant proposal, and many times less expensive than an MRI machine or surgical robot. MORE
