Imaging Parkinsonism in Standing Patients

While Parkinson’s disease derives from cell deaths in the Substantia Nigra region of the brain, other locations—responsible for originating transmissions for memory and balance—are implicated in Parkinson’s syndrome (early stage disease). Patients with the syndrome may experience tremors and might notice that their arms don’t swing in normal walking. A better assessment of these symptoms may be in monitoring frontal lobe blood oxygen relative to gait. For that purpose, Drexel University engineers have developed a “functional near infrared” spectroscopy device that allows oxygen measurement in a standing patient. MORE
