Memristor Computer Chips
June 23, 2015 | Terry Sharrer
In electrical engineering theory, there are four classes of circuitry: resistors, capacitors, inductors, and memristors. The first three have been known almost since Ben Franklin’s time, but memristors were discovered in the 1970’s. In effect, they are memory transistors, usually made of titanium dioxide, and capable of remembering current flow across two terminals after they are turned off. In some important ways, they resemble how neurons and their synapses work. Hewlett Packard may proceed with memristor technology in its aim of “reinventing the computer,” and if so HP or one of its competitors may have the making of an artificial brain for robots and a new realm for artificial intelligence.
