Tracking Blood Pressure with a Smartphone
December 5, 2023 | Terry Sharrer
“Blood pressure is an important indicator of cardiovascular health, but accessing a traditional blood pressure monitor isn’t practical for many people. This has motivated researchers at the University of California in San Diego (UCSD) to develop a low-cost, simple clip that utilizes a smartphone’s camera to measure and track blood pressure from the fingertip of its user. It works with a smartphone application and costs around 80 cents to manufacture. The low cost is possible because the design does not require traditional blood pressure measuring technology or calibration to ensure accuracy. The camera simply records changes in brightness in the fingertip that corresponds to changes in blood pressure.” MORE
