Predicting Microbiome Changes

Enteroendocrine cells in the human gut secrete serotonin, hormones and other chemicals that send signals to the brain via the autonomic vagus nerve. This can be a source of wellness or disease depending on the signaling. Thus, knowing what the microbiome is doing, or will do in the future, is a window into health. In this piece researchers at UCLA and Ben-Gurion University report a new computational modeling program they devised—called “Microbial Temporal Variability Linear Mixed Model”—for predicting changes in the microbiome over time.
