First Cancer Trial for CRISPR
June 11, 2019 | Terry Sharrer
Calling the first use of CRISPR gene editing to treat cancer “a genetic Sputnik”, though this time it was a Chinese experiment, researchers at the University of Pennsylvania have now edited the DNA of patients with both liquid (multiple myeloma) and solid (sarcoma) tumors. The editing involved “…[adding]one gene to make the T cells attack cancer, but they also used CRISPR to delete a different gene, called PD-1, which can act as a brake on the immune system’s defenses.” There’s no mention of the patients’ outcomes.
