“Spray Painting” Biomaterials to Repair Hearts

While this piece suggests a major breakthrough in treating heart damage due to myocardial infarction, it is yet a work in progress. Researchers at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill have tested on animals a “spray painting” process that coats an injured area with a platelet fibrin gel. Apparently, this method does not deliver any new cells, but relies on the gel to stimulate growth factors such as VEGF, IGF-1, HGF, PDGF, and TGF-β for natural healing. MORE
