Transcranial Near-IR Spectroscopy for Locked-In ALS

Can a “locked-in” patient suffering from advanced ALS enjoy life? The question seemed imponderable until Wyss Institute bioengineers created a sensored skull cap that uses transcranial near-infrared spectroscopy to measure blood flow throughout the brain. When several of these patients who were on ventilators were asked if they were happy, their brain oxygenation profile indicated “yes.” MORE
