InterAtrial Shunt Device

About half of heart failure patients suffer from a stiffened heart muscle that causes blood to congest the lungs. The crux of that problem is a buildup of pumping pressure in the upper left atrium, and to correct this, Corvia Medical (Tewksbury, MA) conducted a clinical trial in Australia of its InterArftrial Shunt Device. Using a catheter from the leg to the heart, the cardiac surgeon cuts an 8mm hole in the left atrium, which allows the pressure to equalize with the right atrium. The shunt looks like a tiny sunflower, where the pedals show the piece in tissue with an opening in the center. There is no other device or drug to treat this condition. MORE
