DIY Lab Tests

The Ames Reflectance Meter, when it was patented in 1971, launched a fundamental change in the way diabetics monitored their blood glucose. It opened the way for the “disruptive innovation” of patients doing for themselves what physicians had done previously. That may be happening again with a device called the “Flow Health Hub” from Cambridge Consultants. It is a microfluidics device with which a patient applies a liquid sample (blood urine, mucus or saliva) to a test cartridge and then inserts the cartridge into an analytical station. By this means, people can do their own “lab” tests for lipid, metabolic, renal and electrolyte panels. MORE
