“The Future is Plaque”

This is an unusual rally cry—“The Future is Plaque”—but not so surprising coming from researchers at the Oral Microbiome and Metagenomics Research Lab at the University of Toronto dental school. They have shown that plaque, compared to saliva, holds bacteria in a relatively stable state, is easy to access, and contains biomarkers that indicate a number of diseases throughout the body. Among the ideas that support this observation are creating an “artificial mouth” to study oral microbe genomics, a “plaque bank,” and plaque transplantation. MORE
