3-D Printed Hands for Children
November 11, 2014 | Terry Sharrer
With the gift of a 3-D printer from his wife, a Johns Hopkins trauma surgeon made an artificial hand for a hand-less baby. From there, the idea spread to a network of people with 3-D printers, and in the past year, they have printed some 400 prosthetic hands for children. Indeed, now, from designs that are available on line, families can print their own prosthetics as the child grows. This may not be quite as slick as a $10,000 prosthetic that insurance won’t cover, but it serves some well enough and only costs $20/hand. MORE
