Brain Implant to Restore Memory

Brain stimulators, for example Medtronic’s implantable “brain pacemaker” to control the tremors of Parkinson’s disease, already exist, but DARPA envisions a probe that can restore the memory function of basic motor skills. The military’s need for this stems from 280,000 brain injuries of American soldiers since 2000, but with 1.7m Alzheimer’s disease patients, costing $76b, the civilian demand is at least six times greater.
