Walmart’s “Blue Light” Special for Health Care
February 11, 2014 | Terry Sharrer
We may need an update on the line “what’s good for GM is good for the country.” Walmart might fill in the blank for General Motors because of the health plans it now offers its 1.1 million enrolled employees. As an example, for a nonsmoking couple age 60, the monthly premium is $134, while a comparable government exchange offering is $1,365/mo. Walmart’s people can seek treatment at the Mayo and Cleveland clinics, while those enrolled in the exchange plans cannot. Notice in this piece that Walmart has enrolled nearly 25,000 doctors as health service providers for its plans. It doesn’t take much imagination to foresee Walmart becoming the largest healthcare provider (not just payer) in the country before long. MORE
