Epigenetic diseases may actually be complexes of monogenetic disorders; consequently, studies of rare diseases could open the way to more common ones, if one did an analysis of analyses. Indeed, that has been an approach of biostatistician Andrea Foulkes at the University of Massachusetts at Amherst, using data from existing public databases. But rather than focusing on SNP’s, her process called “MixMap” (for Mixed Modeling of Meta-Analysis P-values) compares regions of DNA where a disorder like elevated cholesterol can be associated with heart disease in precise detail.
