Using a web camera, a small solid state laser, an optical pinhole and free open source software, researchers at Kisarazu National College of Technology in Japan have built a handheld, low cost digital holographic microscope. Instead of showing a two dimensional image of the sample, this optical device produces 3-D images and costs about $250. MORE
