Autotransfusion Device

Typically, blood lost during major surgeries is simply replaced from banked supplies and usually from a different person. Researchers at the University of Stratclyde (Glasgow, Scotland), however, have developed a relatively simple means for recovering blood during surgery and doing an autologous transfusion. The device, called “HemoSep,” relies on a chemical sponge, pump, and mechanical agitation to fill a bag with the patient’s own blood. MORE
