Has biomedicine’s reach exceeded its grasp? Perhaps so, according to two speakers at last month’s TEDMED conference: evolutionary biologist E. O. Wilson and physician Jacob Scott. Scott believes that the means for generating data about every level of individuality has created “too many dots. . . that don’t get connected. Wilson argued that not only should scientific disciplines be more integrated, but biomedicine should have more input from generalists to more broadly interpret life of an individual and life of a society. The outcome of this intellectual integration, undoubtedly, is more astute physicians—which is the real hope of medicine’s future. MORE
