For cost reasons, exome sequencing—i.e. sequencing the protein coding sections of the genome—may precede whole genome sequencing in clinical practice. In fact, exome sequencing began last year at Emory University Medical Center and is now proceeding. While this may miss important links in the so-called non-coding DNA regions, a complete exome does cover all the known actionable genetic mutations and offer explanations for most of the known gene-based diseases.
