Perspective on the e-ICU
In eleven and a half years, electronic monitoring of ICU patients has demonstrated significant decreases in mortality rates, shorter lengths of stay, total margin increases of more than 100%, and a one year ROI. So, why then do so few hospitals (fewer than 20%) employ this highly effective tool? There probably are both good reasons and real reasons. A general shortage of around-the-clock intensivists is one explanation, and training more intensivists is an expense that detracts from other “best practices” implementation. A more convincing reason, though, is that ICU medicine requires a capital investment that mundane, revenue-generating “innovations” lack. Conservative administrators prefer the taste of low-hanging fruit. MORE
