Near Infrared Non-Invasive Glucose Monitor

The solution is as dumbfounding as the problem it addresses, diabetes. Millions of diabetics know they have to closely monitor their blood glucose, but millions more don’t even know they have the disease. Imagine, then, the value of an inexpensive means to check glucose levels, in a single second, without drawing a drop of blood. Every grocery store check out lane could offer a free screen for diabetes; frequent testing becomes prickless. University of Missouri at St. Louis biochemistry professor Xu Zhi has developed such a non-invasive monitor that relies on near-infrared light measuring blood glucose through the skin. The University has licensed the device to St. Louis Medical Devices, Inc. which plans to commercialize it. MORE
