Not surprisingly, lots of US medical device manufacturers are outsourcing much of their noncore R&D work to engineering firms in India. Costs are low there, and the talent is world class. But because Indians, especially country people, have low incomes, device products have to be effective and affordable. With healthcare reform in the US knocking down reimbursements and shifting more costs to individuals, “Made in India” may be a trend following partial outsourcing.
