Automated Sorting of Pharmaceutical Waste
May 10, 2011 | Terry Sharrer
From four billion vials, bottles and ampoules containing regulated materials, American hospitals generate more than 84,000 tons of pharmaceutical waste. Many medications have specific disposal protocols, backed up with federal and state policing. To address this problem, CareFusion (San Diego, CA) has developed an automated system called the “Pyxis EcoStation,” that reads barcodes and sorts containers according to disposal regulations. Besides the environmental benefit, Pyxis removes the human error factor and documents how well a hospital is conforming to rules. MORE
