Myths about “Clouds”
The hospital of the future primarily may be an information service provider-one without any patient beds of its own. Cloud computing, where services and storage are shared over the internet, enables this different kind of hospital model, but there are both myths and risks in execution. Internet security firm Fischer International’s CEO Andrew Sroka recently outlined three of each: myths that identity management in the cloud is less secure; that a company has to change its infrastructure to manage its identify in the cloud; and that cloud-based identity is less manageable than on site means; the risks, that access control has to be tightly held; that employees have to be well educated on security issues; and that most security breaches are “inside” jobs. On balance, though, Sroka believes the benefits far outweigh the risks and those healthcare organizations that become early adopters will have a competitive advantage in compliance, security and patient care.
