Molecular Key to Hematopoiesis
April 26, 2011 | Terry Sharrer
Investigators at Australia’s oldest medical research facility-the Walter and Eliza Hall Institute (founded in 1915)-have added new knowledge about the process of hematopoiesis. They found that ERG gene (found on Chromosome 21, and belonging to a family of Ewing sarcoma oncogenes) has a controlling influence on two other transcription genes that activate the self-renewal process of bone marrow stem cells. This may not be the full pathway for hematopoiesis, but it is an enormous clue for being able to culture blood and immune cells in vitro. MORE
