Six Degrees Sensors
September 14, 2010 | Terry Sharrer
Researchers at the Center for Bits and Atoms at MIT have developed a particle trap that combines the motion sensing of an accelerometer and a gyroscope to track six degrees of motion. The trap holds a gold microsphere between several electrodes, creating suspension in an electrical field, which then detect acceleration, rotation, forward-backward, and side to side movement. As the developers note, the ability to monitor complex movement could be a valuable asset for medical products. MORE
