While it doesn’t have the “personal charm” of a Richard Simmons or Jillian Michaels, “Autom”-a robotic diet coach from Intuitive Automata (www.intuitiveautomata.com )-is an always-congenial companion that communicates with synthesized speech and facial expressions.  It asks the dieter questions about food intake and exercise in tracking progress.  Its maker expects it to be commercially available by Christmas, at a cost of around $500, just in time for New Year’s resolutions.           MORE
