With a $100,000 grant from the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, STAR  Analytical Services (Bedford, MA) has developed sound recognition software that can distinguish between various types of coughs and compare those sounds to a database of coughs, where age, gender, weight and other variables are factored in.  The system now operates on a PC, but STAR expects to have a smartphone version ready soon.    MORE
