Researchers at several universities bioengineering labs are working to create biodegradable devices-patches of electrodes embedded in silk-that could be implanted in, say, the substantia nigra to carry out deep brain stimulation. After the silk substrate dissolves, the electronics would remain where placed. So far, this work has only been done in animals, but the technique works without risk. MORE
