Non-Invasive Brain Blood Flow Monitor
April 21, 2009 | Terry Sharrer
Researchers at the University of Pennsylvania’s Comprehensive Neuroscience Center recently demonstrated a non-invasive portable monitor that measures brain blood flow and metabolism in stroke patients. The instrument places optical probes over the major cortical vessels in both hemispheres and then relies on a system of lasers, photon detecting and radio frequency electronics to sense changes in blood flow, and see on a computer screen if the patient is improving, stabilized or worsening.
