Biopolymer for Cartilage Repair
October 14, 2008 | Terry Sharrer
“Chon Dux” is a new material, made of polyethylene glycol and a bioadhesive that is being used to repair knee cartilage. During a repair procedure, the surgeon identifies the damage site and applies a bioadhesive to its surfaces. Tiny holes are then drilled through adhesive into the bone and the PEG liquid fills both the holes and the site. A UV light finally hardens the liquid into a gel, mimicking new cartilage. Orthopedic surgeon Norman Marcus, who is chief medical officer of Cartilex (Foster City, CA)-manufacturer of this material-believes is offers a solution for repairing early damage from osteoarthritis.
