Undersused CRT?
In an online article of the American Heart Association’s Circulation, researchers report that somewhere between 30% and 50% of cardiac patients who could benefit from CRT (cardiac resynchronization therapy; aka biventricular pacing) are not receiving this implantable device. Adrian Hernandez, M. D., the study’s author and clinical professor at Duke’s Clinical Research Institute, supposed that CRT could result in a 50% reduction of hospitalization for heart failure patients already under care, and a 36% reduction in mortality for those patients. While most researchers agree with these findings, several issues linger: e.g. does CRT benefit patients with mild heart failure, or atrial fibrillation, or conduction abnormality, or pacemaker use.
