Considering the unwashed faithful who filled medieval cathedrals, those inspiring hearths must have been pretty stinky. Then again, maybe not. Zhu Huai Yong, a professor at Queensland University of Technology, believes that the red and gold glass in the cathedral windows acted as air purifiers. Gold particles, as used in making molten glass red or painted on and annealed, create an electromagnetic resonance under sunlight. In effect, the rose windows of Chartres, Sainte Chapelle and others acted as “photocatalytic air pruifiers with nanostructured gold catalyst,” according to Zhu. Still, incensors probably helped. MORE
