Nearly all of knee replacements for the one million people world wide who have them each year rely upon the traditional, three part (tibial, femoral and patellar components) implants that are mass manufactured. A few makers, however, are now custom designing artificial knees that rely on a CT image driving computer aided design and fabrication. Consequently, partial replacements, which save bone tissue, are possible. “MAKOplasty,” one manufacturer of personalized artifical knees was mentioned recently in Medical News Today. Some other companies in this genre are iUni Knee, iForma, iDuo, and iTotal (the i’s in their names referring to iFti technology which converts MRI and CT scans into individualized implants. MORE
